In order to produce high quality oxygen-free copper (Cu-OF) rods, the best choice of raw material is the copper cathode. Cathodes are the most commonly used material in our process, but recycled copper scrap can also be used as a raw material. Recycled copper must be as pure as possible and needs to remain in the furnace for a longer period of time before the casting process. For this reason, it is recommended to use a separate furnace for copper scrap1.

Depending on the output requirements, several types of furnaces can be selected. All furnaces are electrically heated with channel inductors and can be of single or double ring type. A stepless power supply and control system is standard. Smooth power adjustment reduces energy consumption, extends inductor life and eliminates harmonic resonance in the inductor circuit. For casting capacities up to 12,000 TPA, the single furnace configuration is recommended. It is a compact open-top unit built around a combined melting/casting furnace. The dual furnace line is suitable for outputs up to 40,000 TPA. The dual furnace system has separate melting and casting furnaces. When both cathode and recovered copper are used as raw materials, a three-furnace arrangement (two melting furnaces for cathode and recovered copper and one casting furnace) is the most applicable solution1.

SUNY GROUP casting machines are multi-strand systems with a separate cooler for each strand. The higher the output of the casting line, the more strands are used. The coolers are fixed to the casting machine frame located above the combining furnace (single furnace line) or the casting furnace (double and triple furnace lines). A servomotor-driven extraction system pulls the casting product upwards through the cooler. From there, the rods/tubes are guided to a winder, usually a double winder with two separate winder for the rods or, more robustly, separate winder for the tubes. It is possible to cast different sizes of rods/tubes at the same time. Changing from one casting to the other is simply a matter of changing the cooler and running a different casting program in the computer that controls the servo motor drive system. Of course, it is possible to have more than one drive system in the same frame, making it possible to cast different sizes of rods/tubes at the same time. Adding or removing coolers does not interfere with the continuous casting of other strands, thus providing high process availability.
